About me
My name is Marco Hofmann. I am a trained IT-System Engineer and I work since 2007 for the German company ANAXCO GmbH from the city of Sprockhövel (https://www.anaxco.de). I’m part of the IT-Solutions team and my main focus is based on Citrix virtual apps and desktops, Zabbix monitoring, Microsoft Group Policy, Software deployment & Patch management.
Tätigkeiten
Ich arbeite hauptsächlich an den Citrix virtual apps and desktops Umgebungen unserer Kunden und sorge dafür, dass disese rundum stabil laufen und auf dem neusten Stand gehalten werden. Außerdem sorge ich für die Planung und Installation von neuen Farmen bei Neukunden.
Seit 2018 habe ich meinen Schwerpunkt auf das vollautomatische erstellen von Golden Master Images für Citrix Machine Creations Services (MCS) mit dem Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) verlagert. Hierzu wird neben MDT auf PowerShell, Azure DevOps und PDQ gesetzt.
Weiterhin bin ich im allgemeinen für Windows Server und Gruppenrichtlinien im speziellen (nach Intensivkurs, siehe unten) verantwortlich und betreue im Rahmen der Citrix CVAD Administration auch die ThinClient Umgebungen unserer Kunden. Dort handelt es sich im speziellen um Dell Wyse ThinClients mit ThinOS und seltener auch um Igel ThinClients mit IgelOS. Durch die vielfältige Arbeit als Citrix Administrator, haben sich über die Jahre noch weitere Themen hinzugesellt, in die ich mich eingearbeitet habe und in denen ich mich heute mehr oder weniger gut auskenne.
Zu diesen weiteren Themengebieten, gehören die Administration von pfSense Firewalls. Hier natürlich insbesondere die Arbeit mit Firewall Rules, NAT und Aliasen. Aber auch die Konfiguration von VLANs, hauptsächlich im Zusammenspiel mit HPE Aruba ProCurve Switchen.
Da auf Citrix Farmen naturgemäß auch viel im Internet gesurft wird, kann hier mit über einen Web Proxy mit Inhaltsfilter, viel unerwünschter Content weggeblockt werden. Hier kommt gerne der OpenSource Content Filter E2Guardian zum Einsatz. Meist auf Debian GNU/Linux Stable.
Durch meine frühere Arbeit mit kleinen Citrix Farmen ohne Provisioning oder Machine Creation Services, habe ich mich sehr stark mit der Firma PDQ und deren Programmen PDQ Deploy und PDQ Inventory auseinander gesetzt. Hier habe ich mit relativ kurzer Einarbeitungszeit, beeindruckende Erfolge erzielen können und mag diese Werkzeuge nicht mehr missen.
Und zu guter letzt, hat sich neben Citrix, Group Policy und PDQ ein letzter Schwerpunkt etabliert und zwar Verfügbarkeitsmonitoring mit Zabbix. Hier werden zentral alle Geräte, Switche, SANs, Server, Hypervisor, VMs, Services, Dienste, etc. erfasst. Ob ich jemals alle erfasst bekomme ist fraglich, aber aktuell bringe ich es auf 2400+ Hosts mit 160.000+ Items (3000 NVPS). Was uns im Endeffekt eine Menge Arbeit erspart hat bisher. Seit 2017 bin ich zertifiziert für Zabbix 3.0 LTS als Zabbix 3.0 Certified Specialist und Zabbix 3.0 Certified Professional.
What I do at work
I mainly work with the Citrix virtual apps and desktops environments of our customers and make sure that these run stable and are kept up to date. I also take care of the planning and installation of new sites for new customers.
Since 2018 I have shifted my focus to the fully automated creation of Golden Master Images for Citrix Machine Creations Services with the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. For this I also spent a lot of time with Microsoft PowerShell.
Furthermore, I am generally responsible for Windows Server and Group Policy in particular (after the intensive course I did participate in, see below) and also look after the Thin Client environments of our customers as part of the Citrix CVAD administration. There it concerns in particular Dell Wyse ThinClients with ThinOS and more rarely also Igel ThinClients with IgelOS. Due to the varied work as a Citrix administrator, other topics have been added over the years, which I have familiarized myself with and which I am more or less familiar with today.
These additional subject areas include the administration of pfSense firewalls. Here, of course, especially working with firewall rules, NAT and aliases. But also the configuration of VLANs, mainly in conjunction with HPE Aruba ProCurve switches.
Since there is naturally a lot of Internet surfing on Citrix farms, a lot of unwanted content can be blocked away using a web proxy with a content filter. The open source content filter E2Guardian is often used here. Mostly on Debian GNU / Linux stable.
Due to my earlier work with small Citrix farms without provisioning or machine creation services, I dealt very closely with the company PDQ and their programs PDQ Deploy and PDQ Inventory. With a relatively short training period, I have been able to achieve impressive successes and I can no longer do without these tools.
And last but not least, in addition to Citrix, Group Policy and PDQ, a final focus has been established, namely availability monitoring with Zabbix. All devices, switches, SANs, servers, hypervisors, VMs, services, etc. are recorded centrally here. Whether I will ever get all of them is questionable, but currently I have 2600+ hosts with 136,000+ items (2100 NVPS). Which in the end has saved us a lot of work so far. Since 2017 I have been certified for Zabbix 3.0 LTS as a Zabbix 3.0 Certified Specialist and Zabbix 3.0 Certified Professional.
